Why developing managers as intelligence-led coaches is now a business imperative

Managers have a critical role to play in developing the knowledge, skills, behaviours and attitudes of their teams. However, they have not always had the data at their fingertips to make the best decisions about how to coach their people to high performance.

This Viewpoint paper looks at how organisations can develop their managers to help teams flourish now and into the future.

Why is this important?

Managers have a critical part to play in the employee experience.

An analysis of 32 million LinkedIn users , carried out by LinkedIn analyst Candice Cheng, shows that there are two critical factors that underpin employee retention. They are the importance of internal mobility and the effectiveness of managers.

The scale of impact is significant. The analysis shows that those who had an internal move were 25% more likely to still be with their company than those who hadn’t had a move. And employees were 15% more likely to remain with their employer after three years if they had an effective manager!
