Beyond the hype, what is the reality of AI for Learning Systems?

AI, in one form or another, has been around since the 50’s. However, very recently AI has become the hottest topic in town because of the spectacular rise of generative AI. After the initial ‘wow that’s amazing’ reactions died down, the scaremongering started. So, beyond the hype and hysteria what is the current reality for the learning industry?

Why is this important?

One of the biggest talking points within our learning industry today is experience. The need to improve this for the learner is almost universal. AI can be used in many different ways to help and inroads have been made already in some Learning Systems (LS).

As with consumer applications, the early use of AI in LSs started with recommendation engines. However, the jury is out on whether this is successful or not. It is very dependent on clean data and what the system has been told about the learner. Therefore, the buyer organisation has a huge responsibility to ensure it is all verifiable data, or the recommendations will be dreadful and reflect badly on L&D. As this can still be difficult to achieve, some vendors have been using the tried and tested, ‘hardwired’ method to make recommendations.
